A Connected Future: How Elk Grove PD is Redefining Public Safety with Drone Technology

In a city that balances suburban charm with urban sophistication, the Elk Grove Police Department is leading the way in reimagining public safety through cutting-edge technology. With a population nearing 180,000 across 42 square miles, Elk Grove has implemented a forward-thinking, integrated approach to emergency response—anchored by Flock Aerodome's Drone as First Responder (DFR) platform.

Community-Centered Innovation

Elk Grove is more than a geographic location—it’s a community-driven ecosystem where safety and quality of life go hand-in-hand. City leaders and law enforcement officials have made it clear: every investment in public safety technology is made with residents in mind. Whether it’s adding officers, enhancing equipment, or constructing facilities, the question remains constant—how does this serve our people?

When Elk Grove PD discovered the community-first approach embedded in Flock Safety’s mission, the partnership felt natural. From there, the department began expanding its capabilities with DFR, RTIC response integration, and fixed and mobile asset synchronization—all working together like a well-choreographed dance.

Force Multiplication Through Technology

DFR has proven to be a game-changer for Elk Grove PD, serving as a force multiplier by providing aerial intelligence faster than ground units can arrive. The system’s automatic dispatch from CAD calls, battery swap capabilities, and GPS-linked flight paths enable drones to be on-scene in as little as 30 seconds—transforming the agency’s situational awareness.

The result: more efficient calls for service, greater officer safety, and faster resolutions. From following theft suspects across the city using LPR data to assisting in foot pursuits with live drone overwatch, the DFR program adds critical depth to Elk Grove’s response strategy.

Seamless Integration, Real-Time Intelligence

The real-time information center—RTIC—works in seamless unison with sworn officers, dispatchers, and drone pilots. When a call comes in, drones are launched, cameras are activated, and real-time intelligence is delivered back to field units. Officers now respond not with uncertainty, but with clear visuals and strategic advantage.

In one incident, a suspect fled through backyards at night. While officers set up perimeters, a drone pilot used thermal imaging to locate the individual, alert nearby residents, and guide officers safely to an arrest—all in real time.

Expanding Utility Across Departments

DFR’s benefits don’t stop with law enforcement. During structure fires, officers now coordinate with fire battalion chiefs by sharing live drone feeds, helping prioritize resources and response tactics. From fireworks enforcement during July 4th celebrations to traffic accident analysis, DFR has evolved into a multi-purpose asset used across city departments.

Elk Grove’s transparency portal allows residents to see where drones are deployed, reinforcing community trust and minimizing concerns. This open communication ensures the program remains rooted in public service.

Culture of Collaboration and Impact

Perhaps most notably, Elk Grove’s success stems from a culture that values both its sworn and professional staff equally. There are no egos—just a united mission. From training new drone pilots in 10 minutes to running overlapping drone launches across beats, the organization thrives on mutual respect, shared goals, and technology that brings everyone to the table.

As one officer put it, “Technology bridges the gap. It allows us to provide the best public safety response—period.”

Looking Ahead

With FAA waivers allowing for beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations, 24-hour drone coverage is now a reality. Officers can launch drones from their homes or MDTs. And as FlockOS integrates deeper into daily workflows, officers can access live drone feeds with a single click—reducing delays and enhancing collaboration.

From real-time pursuits to preemptive safety checks, Elk Grove’s investment in drone technology isn’t just saving time—it’s saving lives. As the city continues to expand its capabilities, it serves as a model for how modern policing and technology can co-exist to foster safer, smarter, and more connected communities.
