Flock’s mission of building thriving communities attracts people who want their work to matter. That includes everyone from seasoned engineers to interns.

This summer, our interns didn’t just shadow teams; they shipped code, led complex research initiatives, and helped build tools that made an immediate impact across the company.

Two of those interns, Abhinav and Sawyer, shared what drew them to Flock, what they built, and how the experience is shaping their careers.

Why They Joined: Hard Work Worth Doing

“Flock’s mission of stopping crime motivated me to work to get this internship. I wanted to use my engineering skills for a good purpose, which is harder and harder to do today.” — Sawyer

“Working for a company with a great mission and driven people. The technology and how it scales were a curiosity to me.” — Abhinav

Our interns consistently cite the same two reasons for applying: a mission they can stand behind and a chance to learn how high‑scale technology works in the real world.

At Flock, we believe in hard work worth doing. It’s an environment where people give their all because what we’re building truly matters. It’s meaningful work that makes communities safer, which we believe is worth every ounce of effort.

Ownership from Day One

“[The best part was] working with the Gerrit SCM and allowing it to modernize by interfacing securely with LLMs while boosting the developer experience!” — Abhinav

Abhinav took on a modernization initiative for our Gerrit source control workflow. His focus was on integrating secure, responsible LLM capabilities to improve code reviews and developer productivity. The work touched every part of the developer experience—where speed, safety, and accuracy all matter.

I am most proud of my work with the solar panels. I had a task to create a script that could model them and was given complete independence on it. I had to do deep dives into numerical analysis and scientific papers on solar panels. Having the finished program work was extremely satisfying.” — Sawyer

Sawyer’s project tackled performance modeling for solar‑powered deployments, a critical input to how we plan, monitor, and maintain devices in the field. He turned academic research and numerical methods into a production‑ready tool, bridging the gap between theory and impact.

What do these projects have in common? Real business impact, high trust, and meaningful stakes.

A Culture of Empowerment

“I was surprised at the level of responsibility [my fellow] interns and I had. We were all given tasks and were trusted with finishing it, with people always open to help if needed.” — Sawyer

Flock moves fast, but not at the expense of people. Interns felt the urgency of our mission and the support of a team that shows up for one another. The combination of speed with a safety net creates an environment where you can grow quickly without feeling like you’re on an island.

Growth That Goes Beyond Code

“I made a ton of friends and met great, impressive, and capable people. I learned things that I couldn’t learn anywhere else and faced challenges that improved my technical toolbox.” — Abhinav

“I learned how a real world engineering environment works. This is extremely different than what college teaches you, and having this opportunity has given me a new perspective.” — Sawyer

Internships should be more than a line on a resume. For Abhinav and Sawyer, the summer delivered:

  • Hands‑on technical depth, from LLM integration to scientific modeling.

  • Professional fluency, including trade‑offs, code reviews, product thinking, and cross‑functional collaboration.

  • Community, through mentors, peer cohorts, and teams that genuinely enjoy building together.

Advice for Future Interns

Talk to people, ask questions, and be ready to learn!” — Abhinav

“Meet as many people as possible. Try to go to lunch with your co‑workers and learn about the job and real life. I have learned a lot more than engineering at this internship simply by talking to the people around me.” — Sawyer

If you’re considering Flock, come curious. Ask why someone made a decision. Get coffee with someone outside your team. Sit in on a customer conversation. The fastest way to level up at Flock is to plug into the people around you.

Building What Matters

Our summer interns helped push us forward. They brought fresh ideas, asked sharp questions, and shipped work that makes a difference. In return, we offered real problems to solve, the ownership to solve them, and a team that believes great people and great technology go hand in hand.
