Expanding Beyond the Individual Contributor Role

For Alex, one of the biggest takeaways was gaining visibility into parts of the business that sales leaders interact with daily, but ICs don’t always see.

“This is where you start to learn and develop relationships with people you would not normally develop relationships with,” he said.

Those relationships — across sales, customer success, and executive leadership — changed how he thought about growth.

“This exposure is everything when it comes to building relationships and understanding different parts of the business,” Alex added.

Top Gun intentionally mixes revenue roles to mirror the reality of sales leadership: alignment across teams drives sustainable revenue.

A Space to Grow as a Sales Leader

For Shane, Top Gun created room to think beyond closing deals.

“It was a space where people who are interested in becoming better sellers could ask real questions without hesitation,” he said.

The program encourages participants to proactively connect with senior sales leaders and executives. That outreach becomes part of the learning experience.

“Part of the Top Gun program challenged us to branch out,” Shane explained. “I ended up talking to one of our Customer Success leaders, and we had a 30-minute conversation where I asked her about being a leader for the first time — the pros, the cons, what surprised her.”

These are the conversations that help high-performing sellers see the business at a leadership level.

From Sales Performance to Sales Management

Shortly after participating in Top Gun, both Alex and Shane stepped into management roles within the Revenue organization.

Top Gun didn’t hand them titles. It strengthened the skills that sales leadership demands:

  • Thinking like a GM instead of an individual contributor

  • Recruiting and developing top talent

  • Influencing across the revenue organization
