Missing person

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, a 17-year-old dual-enrolled at Prince George County High School and Richard Bland College didn't come home after class or contact her family. Investigators with the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office found her car in the college parking lot with personal belongings inside, including her cellphone, which immediately raised concerns for her safety. Investigators quickly focused on her 19-year-old former boyfriend.

Investigators follow vehicle leads across state lines

Using Flock license plate reader camera data and other available technology, investigators identified vehicle leads that pointed to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. When Myrtle Beach police tried to stop the vehicle, the suspect let the teen out and fled, prompting a pursuit by South Carolina authorities. He then reportedly stole a second vehicle and led police on another chase before escaping on foot.

The teen is reunited with her family

Late Thursday afternoon, Flock license plate reader cameras in Pender County, North Carolina, alerted the sheriff's office to the stolen vehicle. Deputies located it and took the suspect into custody after a brief pursuit. He now faces charges in Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The teen is back home in Virginia with her family after investigators in three states coordinated quickly.
