Ongoing Retail Theft Suspects Caught With Help From Store's LPR Cameras

Earlier this year, Cotati Police Department responded to an ongoing theft in progress at a Lowe's Home Improvement store after the caller reported that someone had committed grand theft based on the value of goods stolen. The suspects had shoplifted from the same location earlier that day before returning to steal more.

Thankfully, the store had Flock Safety LPR cameras that can read license plates as cars enter the parking lot. Due to the LPR cameras - Lowe’s was able to provide officers with relevant vehicle information for the suspects.

Cotari police and other law enforcement agencies responded to the call and found the suspect’s car in the parking lot. The suspects then rammed their car into a Cotari police vehicle and left the area with police in pursuit.

As they were attempting to flee - the suspect’s car crashed into another motorist at an intersection. The suspects then tried to escape on foot, where they were eventually stopped and apprehended by police.

Shrinkage is a significant issue for retailers and has steadily increased. To combat shrink- retailers should extend their threat awareness to their parking lots to ensure they can identify suspects committing theft and other retail crimes.
