The City of El Cajon has received the Golden Watchdog Award in Cities from the San Diego County Taxpayers Association® for its innovative approach to public safety. This award, which recognizes the resourceful and efficient use of taxpayer dollars, highlights El Cajon’s strategic investment in Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology to enhance community security – while demonstrating responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

In partnership with Flock Safety, the department implemented 40 ALPR cameras throughout the city. These cameras have provided real-time data and actionable insights, enabling officers to respond faster and more effectively to crime. With this technology, El Cajon PD has achieved measurable success in crime prevention and response, particularly in cases involving vehicle theft, illegal substances, and violent crime.

Since the ALPR program’s launch just 18 months ago, El Cajon PD has seen impactful results. The system has led to:

• 170+ arrests made
• 130 stolen vehicles recovered, valued collectively at over $1.2 million
• 3 homicide cases solved

Beyond vehicle-related cases, the ALPR system has significantly contributed to broader law enforcement efforts. For example, El Cajon PD has leveraged ALPR data to conduct major drug seizures, removing dangerous substances such as fentanyl and methamphetamine from the community’s streets.
