When you hear “Flock Safety,” license plate recognition might come to mind first, but we’re building so much more. One of our fastest-growing and most innovative products? Video.

With over 30,000 livestreams deployed nationwide, we’ve already made incredible strides in transforming how communities use video to prevent and solve crime, and this is just the beginning.

To bring this vision to life, we’re assembling a team of the best and brightest engineers to push boundaries in the video space and develop technology that advances our mission of eliminating crime and building thriving communities.

Curious about what it’s like to work on video at Flock? We asked some of our leaders on the video team to share their experiences - here’s what they had to say.

Why We Build Video at Flock

Every innovation at Flock starts with purpose. For some of our team members, that purpose is deeply personal.

“Two of my children are in law enforcement, and I want to help build technology to protect them.”

— Ron, Software Engineering Manager

Ron joined Flock not just to advance his career, but to help build technology that protects his family and keeps communities safe.

Rahul, a Senior Product Manager of the video team, echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the mission-driven culture that makes Flock unique:

“There’s very little politics or bureaucracy slowing us down. The video team is made up of genuinely kind, low-ego people who are here because they believe in the mission: building ethical, customer-first tools that help keep communities safe.”

— Rahul, Senior Product Manager

This shared sense of purpose is what drives the team to move fast and tackle big, meaningful challenges.

Tackling Complex Video Challenges

Building video at Flock means solving some of the toughest technical problems in the industry. Unlike traditional video streaming platforms, Flock’s systems must work anywhere, with devices that are solar-powered and connected via LTE, rather than wired networks.

Trevor explains the unique challenge:

“Most video streaming platforms rely on an abundance of available power and a consistent network connection. Flock is shooting for the stars, building video that can operate anywhere.”

— Trevor, Principal Product Manager

That constraint pushes the team to innovate in power-efficient machine learning, low-bandwidth streaming, and real-time data processing - all while supporting a network of tens of thousands of live video feeds.

Harry describes the complexity of managing these systems:

“Running 30,000+ livestreams dynamically presents many networking and scaling challenges. Third-party camera support, low bandwidth, and low-power devices add even more complexity.”

— Harry, Senior Manager, Software Engineering

Because Flock owns the entire video pipeline, from “glass to glass,” the team has full control over how problems are solved. This opens the door to innovative, efficient solutions.

“That flexibility leads to interesting design conversations. Challenges include scalability, latency, and operability of our large network of cameras while surfacing correlatable events to users.”

— Ron, Software Engineering Manager

The Customer Connection

Technology alone isn’t enough. The video team works closely with customers to ensure every feature meets real-world needs.

“We’re building a product we ourselves don’t use, so customer feedback is everything to us. Engineers are encouraged to work directly alongside customers, and many develop strong relationships with the people they’re building for.”

— Trevor, Principal Product Manager

This collaboration has shaped the evolution of Flock’s video products over the past three years. From initial integrations to building in-house video cameras and compute platforms, the team has grown rapidly, always with one key metric in mind: crimes solved.

“I still remember launching our first camera and wondering how long it would take to be used to solve an actual crime. The first solved story came practically the same day. Three years later, we now have a steady stream of those stories coming in.”

— Trevor, Principal Product Manager

Every solved case reinforces the impact of the team’s work and fuels the drive to innovate further.

The Future of Video at Flock

While the progress so far has been remarkable, the team is just getting started.

Harry sees ultra-low latency streaming as the next big leap forward:

“Our goal is sub-200ms glass-to-glass latency, with better alerts and smarter search. Nobody has time to manually search through hours of footage—we’re making that process faster and more intelligent.”

Rahul is particularly excited about the role of AI in making video more actionable:

“Advancements like smarter compression, lower latency streaming, and automated insights directly impact how quickly our customers can solve crimes and keep communities safe.”

And for Trevor, the future lies in infrastructure-free video, enabling reliable streaming even in remote or challenging environments:

“Our devices are solar powered, so we're constantly pushing the edge of power-efficient embedded machine learning and video processing.”

The challenges Flock is solving are as complex as they are meaningful. From designing low-power, edge-computing devices to building AI-powered search tools, every innovation is a step toward a safer future.

If you’re looking for a place where you can own big projects, move fast, and make a real-world impact, this is it.
